How Many Power Points Should Each Room Have?

One of the cheapest things to get right in a build or renovation — and the most common regret when it's wrong — is power points. Here's a sensible guide so you're not living off extension leads.

A room-by-room guide

  • Kitchen — plenty above the bench (appliances add up fast), plus dedicated points for fridge, dishwasher, oven and microwave
  • Living room — doubles on each main wall; think TV wall, devices and lamps
  • Bedrooms — a double each side of the bed plus one or two more
  • Home office — more than you think; computers, chargers, monitors
  • Outdoors/garage — weatherproof points, and consider EV charging provision

Why it's worth doing at build/reno stage

Adding points during a build or renovation, while walls are open, is cheap. Retrofitting later means chasing walls and patching — far more costly and disruptive. It's the classic “wish we'd added more” job.

Plan for the future

Think about where you'll want a heat pump, EV charger, or smart-home gear. We can rough-in provision now so it's an easy add later, rather than a wall-opening exercise. Happy to walk through a plan with you.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is there a minimum number of power points required?

There's no strict per-room legal minimum for existing homes, but new builds are designed to sensible standards. The real goal is enough that you're not relying on multi-boards.

Can you add power points to an existing room?

Yes — though it's tidier and cheaper during a renovation. We can add points to existing rooms and make good afterwards.
