Ceiling Fan Installation in NZ: Summer & Winter

A ceiling fan is one of the cheapest ways to make a room more comfortable all year — cooling in summer and helping push warm air back down in winter. Here's what's involved in fitting one.

Good in summer and winter

In summer, a ceiling fan creates a breeze that makes a room feel several degrees cooler for a fraction of the running cost of air conditioning. In winter, many fans have a reverse setting that gently pushes the warm air — which naturally rises and pools at the ceiling — back down into the room. That's genuinely useful in homes with high or raked ceilings, helping your heating work harder for you. In Rotorua, where bedrooms can get muggy on warm geothermal nights, a quiet bedroom fan is a popular, low-cost comfort upgrade.

Wiring and switch options

  • Wall switch — the fan is wired to a switch on the wall, often replacing or adding to the existing light switch. Tidy and reliable.
  • Remote or pull-cord control — handy for speed and reverse settings without rewiring multiple switches.
  • Fan-and-light combo — many fans include a light; this needs the wiring set up so the fan and light can be controlled separately.

If you're replacing an existing ceiling light, the wiring is often already close by, which keeps the job simple. A fan in a new spot needs a cable run and a properly rated, braced mounting point in the ceiling.

Do you need an electrician?

Yes — connecting a ceiling fan to your mains wiring is electrical work that should be done and certified by a registered electrician. Beyond the connection, a fan is a spinning weight on your ceiling, so it has to be mounted to a sound, braced fixing — not just screwed into plasterboard. An electrician sorts both the wiring and a safe mounting, and tests it before leaving.

Rough cost

As a guide, having a ceiling fan supplied and installed runs roughly $200–$550 in NZ in 2026 for a straightforward swap where wiring and a switch already exist. Running new cable, adding ceiling bracing, or wiring a separate fan/light switch will add to that. We'll give you a clear quote once we've seen the spot.

How we can help

FAQ

Quick answers

Do ceiling fans help in winter too?

Yes — run in reverse on a low speed, a ceiling fan pushes the warm air that collects at the ceiling back down into the room, which helps your heating, especially with high or raked ceilings.

Can I install a ceiling fan myself?

The mains connection is electrical work that should be done and certified by a registered electrician. The fan also needs a properly braced mounting, so it's best left to a pro for safety.

Can a fan go where my ceiling light is now?

Often yes — if wiring is already there it's a simpler job, but the mounting point still needs to be braced to take a fan's weight and movement. We check this as part of the install.
